Optical Imaging at the Nanoscale
Description
The bottom panel was obtained simultaneously using a commercial atomic-force microscope (AFM).optical spectroscopic information
can be obtained at 10 nm resolution, a factor of 30 better than convention optical microscopy. ongoing research is aimed at improving the resolution to ~2 nm, and making the instrument compatible with biological samples.
Implications
Potential applications of include studying the interactions of proteins embedded within cell membranes, which has important consequences for drug discovery, disease, and a basic understanding of cell function.
