Semiconductor nanostructures

Description
The terahertz (THz) spectral range lays in between high-frequency electronics and infrared optics. Photonic bandgap circuits may be micromachined into silicon substrates. Semiconductor nanostructures, such as quantum cascade lasers, we are embedded in these waveguide circuits should allow for systems operating at frequencies above those possible for transistor-based microelectronics.

Implications
The applications fueling the interest in new THz sources include spectroscopic sensing and imaging for biomedical, defense, and homeland security, as well as the potential for high-frequency communication systems.
